Gateway to the Painted Hills! Bend is about 2 and Portland about 4 hours away by car. At this time the town is still a diamond in the rough with a big potential to serve more tourists in the future as it develops its identity as a popular tourist spot. Today the town features three restaurants, an Espresso stand, a general store, a gas station, and three different types of accommodations in the form of a hotel, a motel and a vacation rental with 2 cottages. The region around Mitchell is famous for its wild and natural beauty with spectacular rugged landscapes and impressive vistas at every turn. The most beautiful gem though of all the wonderful places in the region are the Painted Hills! The Painted Hills are not easy described in words — they need to be experienced! The untamed John Day River can be accessed about 10 miles past the Painted Hills and is a popular magnet for boaters, campers, and fishermen. There are some magnificent hikes along its banks, at Priest Hole for example, the local swimming and fishing spot, or the Burnt Ranch boat launch. The other two units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, the Clarno unit about 40 miles North West of Mitchell past the town of Fossil and the Sheeprock unit about 35 miles East of Mitchell on the way to Spray , are easily reached by car on great scenic bye ways with breathtaking views of different landscapes and photogenic rock formations along the way.

Emphasis is placed on a slow, rooted, and deliberate pace with enhanced awareness. The instructions are very clear and detailed, and keyed to accompanying black and white photographs.
An unique part of this book are the sixteen Zhan Zhuang standing meditation exercises, and the considerable emphasis and explanations on inner work, chi gong, and mind training. A Grand Time on Wallowa Lake! This adventure would not only be the fishing trip of the year for both of us, but could potentially be the fishing trip of a lifetime! We would likely fish for trout as well, and even lake trout. I left home with the boat in tow behind the coach. If I do say so myself, the rig makes quite a sight!
I towed the old C-Dory behind the coach several times, and this would be the first with the new boat.

Its a long story, which is appropriate because America is a big country. Some days I felt like the race would never end, but in the end it did. When I arrived at the car park outside the Astoria Maritime Center I again tried to re-boot my eTrex but it was useless. I asked a few people unloading riders from cars if they by chance had a laptop but nobody did. There were about riders at the start of the Trans Am this year and after a short speech by the organiser Nathan we rolled out just after As we passed the turn off for my motel I pulled in and then asked at reception if I could use their desktop PC to try to sort out my GPS problems.
As I headed back out on the road after a 40mins delay I hoped that this would be my first and last problem of the ride.
History[ edit ] The railroad had its origins in the late s, when the city of Prineville was bypassed by the Oregon Trunk Railroad , resulting in the city losing business to nearby towns that did have railroad service, such as Bend. After two failed attempts in the early s, the city decided to take matters into its own hands and in chartered a railroad. The line opened in After struggling early on, the railroad eventually was able to gain new customers in the sawmills that opened up near Prineville to take advantage of the recently opened timber of the Ochoco Mountains east of the city.
In , two significant events took place on the COP. First, the railroad was able to finally turn its first profit and second, the railroad terminated its passenger service, which had been declining since the early s.

Most of the human toll was the result of cholera. While the diaries often suggest that the cattle died from an imaginary disease called “hollow horn”, it is thought by some experts that the loss of cattle was actually due to anthrax with the stress of the journey as a contributing factor. The diaries and journals available for that year mention seeing wagons “as far as the eye can see” both ahead and behind. While it has been estimated that over 10, adventurous souls started out for Oregon in , an accounting of how many actually arrived is hard to determine.
It is thought that as many as 1, may have turned back. Indians were not as troublesome in as some of the other years. The size of the emigration also no doubt had a bearing.

Our site was on dirt, near the rest room and with some shade. Our site was also on a mild slope, but we were able to level our rig. In several roles Hoffman embodies characters that are not afraid to speak their minds — while at the same time modeling a spirit of community service. So it is with Jim Van Voorhees. Born and raised in West Caldwell, New Jersey, Van Voorhees was raised in a career-minded family that wanted him to succeed at whatever profession he chose. As a result young Jim was exposed early to the law profession.
Rejections were received from several eastern law schools. But unfortunately all three passed me over at first. He called the Dean at Willamette University. He told me right there and then that he could find me a room. He was glad he made the career move into law. He enjoyed the area and, while working for Steger, connected with another law firm that liked what they saw in the budding lawyer. Forty-four years later and Van Voorhees is still practicing law in Prineville.
